Playing with Purpose

There’s a lot more happening when kids play sports than learning how to pass a ball, make a shot, or improve a personal best. Every practice, game, win, and setback gives kids a chance to learn something about themselves and the people around them. They practice perseverance when something doesn’t come easily, learn to trust and support their teammates, discover how to lead, and experience what it feels like to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Those lessons have a natural home at Jewish camp. At the heart of both sports and camp is the idea that we grow not only as individuals, but as members of a community. Being a great teammate asks many of the same things that being part of a strong kehillah, or community, asks of us: showing respect, taking responsibility, supporting others, bringing your own strengths to the group, and helping the people around you succeed.

This summer, that connection will come to life in a new way as we welcome Maccabi Sports Camp to the Ranch and introduce sports specialty programs to our community. Campers will have the opportunity to spend meaningful time developing their athletic skills while experiencing everything that makes overnight camp so powerful.

Through competition, teamwork, and plenty of play, campers will put Jewish values into action. Kavod (respect) can look like respecting an opponent or listening to a coach. Kehillah (community) comes alive when teammates learn that everyone has a role to play. And ruach (spirit) is something campers won’t just talk about. They’ll experience it when they cheer from the sidelines, celebrate one another, and bring energy to their team.

Whether a camper arrives as an experienced athlete or is simply excited to try something new, sports at camp are about more than what happens on the field or court. They’re another place to take a risk, discover a strength, learn how to be part of a team, and grow into the person and teammate they want to become.
